Well, at last, I'm back... and I come bearing BLOOD. Cause my bestest best friend in the world loaned me Bloodtype. So the next three translations you'll see from me are dedicated to her. :D I've already transcribed the kanji and romaji lyrics, so all I have left now is to translate... the hardest part, of course, but also the most rewarding. And every song on this album just fascinates me for some reason, so it should be a fun ride. I'm going to start with Kanaria, because I think it fascinates me more than any other song on the CD. Blood ranks right up there too, but someone else has already translated it, so... oh well. Makes it easier on me, na? Anyway... Kanaria is a gorgeous, extraordinarily fluid tune with the sweetest vocal work I've ever heard from Dai-san (which isn't much, but it's still very sweet-sounding). Just by listening to it I can tell there's a very sad love story lying in it, full of love and devotion on the narrator's part, but receiving only pain in return - and continuing to offer his full devotion anyway. Now, I wonder why a song like that would touch ME of all people... ¬_¬ Seriously though, this song fascinates me. I'm excited. ^_^ So here we go~ Enjoy! Oooh, I get chills. ^.^ Only one small footnote... [1] The lyrics sheet says " anata no nukumori o," but Dai just sings "nukumori o." The former means your warmth, as opposed to just warmth in general; I'm guessing the sung version is kind of an unnatural abbreviation. Like, he's experiencing so much pain, some of his words don't really come out, so you get this kinda broken, telegraphic sentence. I love this song~ English away! If only I could just disappear, it would end with no pain, wouldn't it? The canary you gave me wished for the same thing, didn't it? A love only in form, born bound at the hands and feet Lying stretched out on the bed, am I a living corpse? ...but that's all right... but that's all right, I cry out The canary is laughing at me ...with cold eyes... If you think about it, the time we held each other started it all, didn't it? If my wish comes true... just once more... ...your warmth... Lying stretched out on the bed, am I a living corpse? ...but that's all right... but that's all right, I cry out The canary laughed at me... You play with me as if I were crippled... am I your toy? ...but that's all right... but that's all right, I cry out The canary is staring at me ...with cold eyes... "Set me free..." ... ... ...there. Song like this needs to be followed by a moment of silence. *wills the shivering to cease* So I don't really have any specific footnotes, but I would point out that every time there's a line with the canary laughing at or staring at the narrator, in Japanese that line links up a little more smoothly with the line before it, but in English it's really hard to do that and maintain the flow of the song. Like, a more literal translation would be "the canary laughs/stares at me, who cries out 'even so, it's all right...'" or some such. Doesn't make a lot of sense in English, does it? But it's a perfectly natural structure in Japanese. Meh. Yeah, so I had to English-ify those parts a little more than I typically like to, but I'd rather keep the flow of the lyrics intact than keep every word a 100% literal translation, so I think it works out. So now I think I'll go a step further than I usually do in my translations, and give my little interpretation of these lyrics. Actually, I think they're fairly straightforward, but I'm gonna do it anyway, because I'm so in love with this song it's not funny. So... this guy is offering his utmost love and devotion to this other person (I'm not one to specify gender ^_~), who was kind to him at first, but now does nothing but torture him and play with his heart. This will go on until our poor, sweet narrator is essentially a living corpse, at which point his tormentor will probably move on to a new victim. Now here's the parallel: this tormentor had a canary, which s/he gave to the narrator at the beginning of their relationship. The canary may actually physically exist, or it may just be a metaphor... but either way, this canary suffered the same kind of abuse at this tormentor's hands (hence the second line of the song - it wished in vain for a painless ending too), and its being given to the narrator was its equivalent of being discarded. So this canary knows exactly what this guy is going through and what will happen to him, and that's why it just keeps watching, laughing at his naive desire for a freedom he can't have. Its cold eyes indicate that the poor bird has already been used up and is now a living corpse. ...That's how I see it, anyway. Agree or disagree. But, man, talk about a new obsession for me... <3 (disclaimer: this song belongs to BLOOD, not me. I only take credit for the romanization and translation. I'm always finding Japanese songs that I adore, but can't find English translations for. So I've made a hobby of translating such songs, and this is where I put them. Can't find the song you want? Send me the lyrics (kanji if possible, but romaji will do) and I'll see what I can do. But no promises, as I'm not exactly the most fluent Japanese speaker around.
