*Edited June 9* I don't know when I'll have time to translate it, but I'm getting antsy to get it out of the way, so here comes the last Bloodtype translation I'll be doing. Maria is the upbeat, catchy song of the album. Soundwise, it doesn't have the serenity, eerie beauty, or intensity of the other three tracks, so in that respect it's kinda the unique one of the bunch. I'm looking forward to seeing how the lyrics fit that generalization, if at all. But I'm also guessing this wil be quite a rough task, because just by listening to it I can tell this song is... heavy. I mean, hey, it's called Maria. Every J-music song with that title inherently oozes depth and meaning. ;P But anyway... I'm gonna try. BLOOD - MARIA Dare no tame ni umarete Sarasareta ratai Omae o motome samayou Yume miru tenshi-tachi no saigo Dakishimerare umare yuku Kegareta yokubou Omae no mae de sakedasu Buzama na ore no sugata Chikaitsuzuketa ore no Maria Omae ni wakaru ka? myaku utsu kodou o... Kakusei sareta kono inochi Omae ni jihi no kutsuu o Sadamerareta kono inochi ni Omae no kago ga aru no ka Kakusei sareta kono inochi Omae ni jihi no kutsuu o Sadamerareta kono inochi ni Ima Kagayaki no yadoshite Hiza o kakae obiete iru Aware na kohitsuji Mujihi no yami ni suterarete Buzama na ore Aishiteita ore no Maria Omae ni wakaru ka? Shinku no namida In English *takes deep breath*: For whose sake was I born, this naked body exposed? [1] I wander about, searching for you - the last of the dreaming angels Born and dying in your embrace; tainted desires My inept form begins to tear apart before you My Maria, who kept on making vows Do you understand why my heartbeat has begun to race?... This life, awakened, hands its merciful agony to you [2] In this predestined life, can your divine protection be found? This life, awakened, hands its merciful agony to you In this predestined life, radiance is now conceived [3] Arms clasped around my knees, a frightened, helpless lamb, I, who am inept, am cast away into merciless darkness My Maria, whom I loved Do you understand why these crimson tears fall? Translating is such a rewarding hobby when it turns out well. When it doesn't, however, you just want to claw your own eyes out. =_= Footnotes don't cover everything that doesn't make sense about this translation, but here we go... [1] The beginning of this line is "Dare no tame ni," which means "For whose sake." Seems to me it should logically be followed by an interrogative verb, but it's not. "Born for whose sake" doesn't make sense unless it's a question, but there's no question in the verse. *tears hair out* My guess is the narrator doesn't know who he was born for, but "Born for whose sake I don't know" is just really clunky. [2] I think this could be seen in two ways... 1) pain is being handed over to Maria as if by charity (for comparison, think Jesus taking the weight of man's sin upon himself), or 2) giving someone "merciful pain/agony." I don't know how pain is merciful, which would make that particular interpretation ironic or something. I think they both sound pretty cool, but both are hard to express in English, which is just as well cause I don't know which one was intended here anyway. >< [3] The line says "kagayaki no yadoshite." That last word is a verb, and verbs are grammatically NOT supposed to be preceded by the particle "no" unless it's in a verb phrase that modifies a following noun phrase. I won't go into a big linguistic shpiel here... just take that to mean this makes no sense to me. -_- There's something about radiance, and something about conceiving, and they're connected; but if the radiance did the conceiving, the object conceived should be specified. But it's not. So I tried it the other way. This is obviously one of those songs that is NOT gonna be ready for the public to see for some time. Lots of cleanup needed. *mutter* At least I'm getting Oboro, Sakura, and Prayer closer to ready for submission, finally... (disclaimer: this song belongs to BLOOD, not me. I only take credit for the romanization and translation (sorry as I am to admit that). I'm just a fangirl trying to make J-music a little more accessible to Americans. I'm always finding Japanese songs that I adore, but can't find English translations for. So I've made a hobby of translating such songs, and this is where I put them. Can't find the song you want? Send me the lyrics (kanji if possible, but romaji will do) and I'll see what I can do. But no promises, as I'm not exactly the most fluent Japanese speaker around. Also, PLEASE don't display any of these lyrics elsewhere unless you credit me. Just my name and a link back here would be great. Thanks!
