Well, I posted here a couple days ago, but apparently Blogger thinks otherwise. -_- So here I am again. Pardon me if this post seems abbreviated or anything... I really don't feel like re-typing everything I put here and lost the other day. But that's why I've published this as a March 30 post instead of an April 1 one. Sorry to disappoint you folks waiting for an April Fools gag of some sort... that's not my style. (translation, since that's what this site is about: I'm too lazy to come up with good gags.) First off, I've gone back and done some editing in the Byakuya and Oboro lyrics. Minor changes, but enough to warrant an edit. I just wish I'd found the little difference in Byakuya BEFORE I sent it off for public viewing at HOB... but what can you do. Anyway, to make this post worthwhile, I'm also going to finally bring over the last as-yet-unported translation from my regular blog; after that I'll be all caught up. That would be Itsuka Kimi ga by Mitsunaga Ryouta. It's late because I was... kinda trying to avoid ever having to look at it again for a while there. But at one point in time I could listen to this beautiful ballad for hours on end and just get so lost in the story and Mitsunaga-san's fluid voice that I didn't realize it. Be warned though - I was a hopeless sap then, too. ¬_¬ So here it is... enjoy. MITSUNAGA RYOUTA - ITSUKA KIMI GA (SOMEDAY, YOU'LL...) Tons of footnotes. A general one first: these lyrics make sense grammatically, and pretty much every word was easily translateable (the ones that weren't would have been if I had the kanji to go by), but some lines and words just seem totally out of place in the song. Other parts just don't seem to make semantic sense. But all that considered, I think this translation came out... well, decent. It tells the story. So... footnotes. [1] The word that tripped me up here was "kasa." It really would've helped if I had the lyrics in kanji to refer to, because "kasa" can be written and read in several different ways. Among the meanings I found were bulk/volume, ring/halo, bamboo hat/shade, and umbrella. I chose the first, because it seemed to make the most sense. [2] "Bishonure" means wet to the skin, soaked, drenched, etc. I think it means the one referred to was standing in the rain, or possibly crying... but nothing is mentioned about rain or tears anywhere else in the song. Except the "kasa" thing in the previous couple lines... maybe it was a pun on the word for umbrella. *shrug* [3] This really just doesn't seem to fit right. The first word in this 2-word line means unsatisfied or unsatisfactory, and the second means left side of the street. They don't seem to go together, and they just sound really out of place in the song. Sorry. [4] Here, 'played' is used in the sense of playing a musical instrument. So he's sending her a melody heard from afar, but he's not the one playing it. Or, with different intonation of "ja nai" (which I could only know for sure if I could see the original kanji transcription), one could translate it to something like "Didn't I play it [for you]?" Neither really makes sense... -_- [5] The first and second lines of this stanza gave me the same problem: I didn't know who it was talking about. It could be "I was approaching you playfully/I crossed this distance (between us) now, so..." or it could be what I ended up writing up there. Another consequence of the minimal use of pronouns (you, I/me, he, she, it) in Japanese. Well, I tried. At least you get the general idea. I will make no promises as to when my next translation will appear, since my latest musical obsessions are with songs that already have good translations floating around online. Except BLOOD, of course... and they've just released a collection of their best older songs today, so in the next month or so (>.>) I should get my hands on it. Depends on if I decide to shell out the full $40 for it online or wait and try to have someone pick me up a copy from Fanime at the end of May, which would be cheaper but it'd take longer, which worries me since they're only making 500 copies. If they sell out before Fanime I'd be doomed. >< Anyway... assuming the lyrics are included with that album, that'll be my next big project. ^_^ *hoping* (disclaimer: this song belongs to Mitsunaga Ryouta (and/or probably his record label, producers, whatever), not me. Romanization was found at a website that I can't seem to find anymore. I only take credit for the translation. I'm just a fangirl trying to make J-music a little more accessible to Americans. I'm always finding Japanese songs that I adore, but can't find English translations for. So I've made a hobby of translating such songs, and this is where I put them. Can't find the song you want? Send me the lyrics (kanji if possible, but romaji will do) and I'll see what I can do. But no promises, as I'm not exactly the most fluent Japanese speaker around.
