I'm temporarily out of BLOOD material to translate. T_T But fear not - before long I will own their album Bloodtype, and that'll be my next project. Either that or I'll borrow some kanji/romaji lyrics from BLOOD fansites and translate them that way... but I'd much rather be able to hear songs before I translate them, so... we'll see. But never fear, more BLOOD will come soon! For now, though, I have scored a hard-fought victory on another front. Last year during the fall season, this J-drama called Dr. Koto's Clinic was on the International Channel, and though I didn't get into it like I got into Wedding Planner and Love Generation, it was enjoyable. The lead actor just had this cuteness to him that I can't really identify. I always wanted to pinch his cheeks. ^_^ Anyway... the highlight of the dorama for me was the ending theme, Gin no Ryuu no Sei ni Notte by Nakajima Miyuki. The instrumental intro is contemplative, mournful, and sweet all at once; it always started to play just shortly before the last scene of the episode faded into the credits, and it always felt so appropriate. The lyrics add sort of an epic feel to the instrumentation and Nakajima-san's strong voice, and by the end, it builds into this triumphant anthem of a song, overlaying a wide shot of the dorama's main character sitting on a cliff on the island he lives on, overlooking the sparse shore where his clinic is and the vast ocean and sky beyond. So what was my victory? After months of searching, I FINALLY found this song. Only to find out that for some bizarre reason it would not stay on my hard drive once downloaded. So I had to wait even longer for another version to turn up online, and just this afternoon, the wait paid off. The song now rests comfortably in my J-music folder, there to stay. And I can't find evidence of an English translation on the net anywhere, so I'm taking it upon myself. Enjoy! So can you tell now that the main character of this dorama was a young, determined doctor who wants only to help others to make up for a terrible mistake in his past? Well, sort of... I think... yeah, and it even seems to be sung from a male point of view, indicated by predominantly male-language words such as "boku" and "yukou ze." Anyway... some of these lyrics probably sound a lot better in Japanese than they do in English, but where I could, I tried to apply minor tweaks so they'd make sense while still staying tight to the original language. Just from listening to this song early on, before I even considered what it meant, I knew there was a lot to its lyrics, and I was right. So I'll be pretty darn proud if I succeeded. That aside, the only footnote is a cultural one... [1] The word used in this line is actually "kinome," which generally means a leaf bud, but can also refer to a bud of a Japanese pepper tree. I'm not sure how this relates to unreliability or weakness as indicated in this line, but I know these pepper leaves are best utilized when they're young, if that means anything. Maybe they're notorious for being short-lived (the ever-popular Japanese theme of impermanence). *shrug* That's all I have to say about this song. Get it. It's awesome. ^.^ Translating it was fun, but to be honest, I eagerly await the day when this little sabbatical from the lyrical world of BLOOD comes to an end. *makes mental note to order Bloodtype REALLY soon* (disclaimer: this song belongs to Nakajima Miyuki, not me. I'm always finding Japanese songs that I adore, but can't find English translations for. So I've made a hobby of translating such songs, and this is where I put them. Can't find the song you want? Send me the lyrics (kanji if possible, but romaji will do) and I'll see what I can do. But no promises, as I'm not exactly the most fluent Japanese speaker around.
